PASTAVY, BELARUS – A 25-year-old orphan, who has been on the waiting list for social housing since 2016, recently confronted local government officials in Pastavy regarding the lack of available housing. The young man, who wishes to remain anonymous, documented his visit to the housing department, where he sought answers about his long-delayed housing provision. During the exchange, an official stated, "Social housing is not being built." When pressed on alternatives, she explained that while one-room apartments are designated for orphans, none are currently available. She proposed a rental housing option, clarifying, "You make the repairs with your own money, and then you won't pay rent for a period equal to the repair cost." The young man expressed his frustration, questioning why social housing was being replaced by rental agreements and highlighting the nine-year wait. Another official interjected, stating, "We don't build housing, nor do we allocate funds. Funds are allocated by the regional administration." He added that they consistently request one-room social housing whenever new construction is planned. When the young man inquired about the timeframe for receiving housing, the official admitted, "I cannot answer that question. When they are built, we will request them." The officials also questioned the legality of recording in what they termed a 'service premise,' to which the young man responded, "This is a public place." The video concludes with the young man asserting that the public will now understand the challenges faced by citizens seeking government assistance.
