Laos' First Mango Export to China Signals New Era in Trade
Laos Makes First Mango Export to China, Opening New Trade Era VIENTIANE, Laos – In a landmark development for Laotian agriculture, the country has successfully exported its first shipment of fresh mangoes to China. This marks a new chapter in agricultural trade between the two nations, stemming from an agreement signed in 2023 that paved the way for such exports. The initial shipment, totaling 90 tons of mangoes transported in three trucks, represents a significant step towards boosting Laos' economy and strengthening trade ties with China. According to Yang Zhiyong, a representative from the Chinese import company Hinan Changzhou, "This is a significant achievement, not only benefiting local farmers but also strengthening regional trade integration." The success is attributed to Laos' commitment to meeting stringent plant health and hygiene standards, crucial for accessing international markets. The export also reflects the growth of Laos' agricultural sector. In 2024, the country's agricultural production increased by 11.9% compared to the previous year, largely due to crops such as corn, sugarcane, cassava, bananas, and coffee. With 2248 hectares now dedicated to mango cultivation, Laos is poised for further expansion in this sector. This successful export is a testament to the potential of agricultural collaboration between Laos and China, offering a promising outlook for future trade and economic development in the region.
