Spanish Minister Highlights Legal Protections for Pregnant Workers After Unjust Dismissal Case

Spanish Minister Yolanda Diaz Advocates for Pregnant Workers' Rights Madrid, Spain – Yolanda Diaz, Spain's Second Vice-President and Minister, has issued a public address emphasizing the robust legal protections afforded to pregnant working women in the country. In a recent video, Minister Diaz recounted a compelling case where a woman, three months pregnant, was dismissed from her job following a prenatal medical examination. Despite a history of no prior complaints, her employer cited a decline in performance over the past year as the reason for termination. "She sought legal aid and discovered that the dismissal was illegal," Minister Diaz stated, her voice conveying a mix of concern and determination. "Clearly, it was illegal. She filed a complaint, and after several months, she received compensation." However, Diaz lamented, "The damage was already done because she had already been fired from her job." Minister Diaz underscored the importance of awareness, urging, "I want other women to know that they have rights and that they are not alone." She explicitly clarified the legal stance: "What you have experienced, in my judgment, is a dismissal that should be qualified as null and void due to the violation of fundamental rights. A woman cannot be dismissed when she is pregnant." She further elaborated on the rights of pregnant employees, stating, "You have the right to attend as many medical tests or whatever is necessary, without any prejudice, without any reprisal in your workplace." Minister Diaz concluded by encouraging viewers to share this information, asserting that "institutions work" and that women are "absolutely protected in these cases." She commended the woman who took action, noting, "She acted very well; she denounced the employer and has taken action."
