ZELVA DISTRICT, BELARUS – Residents and environmental activists are raising alarms over the alleged burning of chemical canisters by a collective farm in the Zelva district of Grodno Oblast. A video uploaded on August 2, 2025, shows a large pile of plastic containers engulfed in flames, emitting thick plumes of black smoke into the sky. The author of the video, identified as Irina, stated in her narration that the collective farm is "utilizing" canisters that previously held agrochemicals. She highlighted the concerning proximity of the burning site to a nearby village, expressing fears about the environmental and health impacts on local residents. "They brought the waste, set it on fire, and left," Irina commented in the video, emphasizing the apparent lack of proper disposal methods. The footage clearly shows numerous white and colored plastic containers amidst the active fire. The incident has sparked a debate online, with some users expressing outrage over potential environmental violations, while others suggest that the canisters might have been rinsed, minimizing harm. However, environmental experts generally advise against burning plastic, especially those containing chemical residues, due to the release of toxic fumes. Local authorities have yet to comment on the incident. The video quickly gained traction, accumulating over 270,000 views, indicating widespread public concern regarding environmental protection and waste management practices in the region.
