    Environmental Breach in Zelva: Company Apologizes, Officials Initiate Legal Action After Chemical Waste Burning

    ZELVA, Belarus – An environmental incident involving the burning of empty chemical containers by the Mizherechi branch of Biokom LLC has prompted an official response and administrative action. The incident, brought to light by a video posted on TikTok on August 2nd, led to the release of a significant amount of harmful substances into the atmosphere, negatively impacting the local environment. Gennady Petrovich Chigrin, head of the Zelva District Inspectorate of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, confirmed the facts presented in the viral video. "Upon receiving the report, I went to the specified location. The fact was confirmed. As a result, a large quantity of harmful substances was released into the atmosphere, which negatively affected the environment in the area," Chigrin stated. He also noted that the containers should have been collected and sent to specialized organizations for recycling, which was not done. Dmitry Mikhailovich Doroshkevich, director of Biokom's Mizherechi branch, issued a public apology to the residents of Klepachi village for the inconvenience caused. "The management of the Mizherechi branch offers its sincere apologies to the residents of Klepachi village for the inconvenience caused," Doroshkevich said. He added that work has been conducted with the employees responsible for the disposal of the chemical containers, and the company is now monitoring the situation closely to prevent similar incidents in the future. As of today, the site where the containers were burned has been cleaned, and an administrative process has been initiated against the responsible officials and the legal entity, Biokom LLC, under Article 16.44, Part 3 of the Administrative Offenses Code. This article imposes fines of up to 30 base values for officials and up to 1000 base values for legal entities.
