Pontiac, Michigan: Mass Shooting Plot Thwarted at Graduation Ceremony On Tuesday, June 6th, 2025, a potential tragedy was averted at the Arts and Technology Academy of Pontiac graduation ceremony. Two suspects, 19-year-old Deahyeom Shamar-James Whalley and 20-year-old Jamarion Jaryante Hardiman, were apprehended following the discovery of a Snapchat threat detailing a plan to "shoot up" the event. The threat prompted a swift response from law enforcement, who responded to a separate fight that had broken out during the ceremony. A subsequent search of the parking lot uncovered two loaded firearms, one a pink AR-style pistol with an aiming device, and both equipped with high-capacity magazines. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard stated, "Each weapon had a 40-round magazine, and they had one in the chamber and loaded magazines." The discovery of the weapons underscores the seriousness of the alleged plot. Both suspects have a history of weapons-related offenses. One of the suspects is currently on probation for a weapons offense. Thankfully, the swift action of law enforcement and the school's security team prevented any injuries during the incident. The school released a statement saying, "Thankfully, no one within the ceremony was harmed, and we were able to continue and complete our beautiful commencement celebration without further disruption." This incident highlights the importance of vigilance and swift action in preventing potential acts of violence. The successful intervention by law enforcement serves as a reminder of the crucial role they play in ensuring the safety and security of communities.
