Madrid, Spain – A man's three-year medical ordeal found an unexpected resolution when ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence model, accurately identified a rare pancreatic tumor that had eluded multiple human doctors. The patient, who wishes to remain anonymous, experienced a range of debilitating symptoms, including tingling, numbness, dizziness, double vision, and unexplained weight gain. Despite consulting several specialists, including a neurologist, and undergoing extensive tests like MRI scans of his neck and brain, no definitive diagnosis was reached. Doctors attributed his symptoms to non-critical issues, leaving him in a state of prolonged uncertainty and discomfort. In a moment of desperation, the patient decided to input all his symptoms, medical history, and test results into an advanced AI model. Within minutes, ChatGPT's differential diagnosis highlighted 'insulinoma' – a rare tumor of the pancreas that causes excessive insulin production and drastically low blood sugar levels – as a primary possibility. Prompted by this insight, the patient acquired a glucose sensor, which confirmed his blood glucose levels were frequently dropping to dangerously low ranges (30-40 mg/dL), far below the normal minimum of 70 mg/dL. Recognizing the severity of these findings, he immediately sought emergency medical attention. At the Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda, an internist, after reviewing the new data and conducting further analytics, confirmed the AI's suggested diagnosis. Approximately a month and a half later, the patient underwent a delicate surgery to remove two-thirds of his pancreas. He has since recovered, and his symptoms have subsided. This case underscores the growing potential of artificial intelligence as a supplementary tool in medical diagnostics, offering a vast knowledge base that can assist healthcare professionals in identifying complex or rare conditions. The patient expressed profound gratitude to the medical team at Puerta de Hierro for their expertise and care, which ultimately saved his life.
