Mechanic Urges Second Opinions After Client's Toyota RAV4 Saved from Scrap Heap Badajoz, Spain – An automotive expert is highlighting the critical importance of seeking a second opinion for car repairs, following an incident where a client was advised to discard a perfectly salvageable vehicle. Ángel Gaitán, a mechanic from GT Automoción, shared a recent case involving a 2007 Toyota RAV4. According to Mr. Gaitán, the owner of the Toyota RAV4 was told by a workshop in Badajoz that their vehicle, which they incorrectly identified as having 136 horsepower, had a severe head gasket problem rendering it irreparable and not worth the cost. The workshop allegedly suggested the car should be scrapped. However, a quick check of official vehicle data by Mr. Gaitán revealed crucial discrepancies. "The car is a 2007 Toyota RAV4 with 177 horsepower, not 136," Mr. Gaitán stated, displaying the vehicle's specifications on his laptop. He further demonstrated that all necessary parts for repairing the head gasket and injectors are readily available, contradicting the previous workshop's assessment. Mr. Gaitán expressed concern over such practices. "It's very common for many workshops to tell clients to discard their cars, which still hold significant value, only to acquire them cheaply and then resell them at a profit," he warned. He stressed that resolving a head gasket issue on a 2007 Toyota RAV4 of this power is entirely feasible and worthwhile. "Always ask for a second opinion," Mr. Gaitán advised. "This is like going to the doctor, but even worse, because many workshops want to keep your car for next to nothing and then sell it for a good price." The incident serves as a stark reminder for car owners to be vigilant and verify diagnoses, especially when faced with costly or seemingly terminal repair recommendations.
