Madrid, Spain – A recent video posted by local automotive enthusiast Ángel Gaitan has brought to light the ongoing frustrations faced by electric vehicle owners and the general public regarding the reliability of modern infrastructure in the city. Gaitan documented two separate incidents, both pointing to significant operational shortcomings in Madrid's supposedly advanced facilities. In the first instance, Gaitan attempted to charge his electric Mercedes at a public parking garage near the Niño Jesús Hospital. To his dismay, all available charging points were found to be "deshabilitado" (disabled), accompanied by a notice from APK Electric stating they were "in the process of installation" of their own charging points. Gaitan expressed his disappointment, stating, "We are in 2025, and yet these chargers are still not functional." He questioned whether the facilities had received subsidies without delivering operational services. Later, Gaitan encountered further issues at a different modern parking facility designed for ticketless exit via license plate recognition. Despite multiple attempts to align his vehicle with the camera and pressing the assistance button, the system failed to recognize his license plate. After a prolonged wait and a call to a parking attendant, who identified the issue as a "fallo del sistema" (system failure), Gaitan was finally granted exit. He wryly compared the situation to the often-criticized state railway service, Renfe, noting, "It's like Renfe, isn't it?" Gaitan concluded his video by emphasizing that such issues are not isolated incidents and contribute to a broader problem in Spain. "If the chargers were truly private and generated income, they would be working from day two," he argued, suggesting that reliance on subsidies might lead to a lack of accountability for operational readiness. He stressed the need for functional infrastructure, especially as electric vehicles become more prevalent. The video has resonated with many online, with commenters sharing similar experiences and expressing concerns about Spain's readiness for a fully electric future.
