Malaysia Tightens Vehicle Inspection Rules for Enhanced Road Safety
Malaysia Implements Stricter Vehicle Inspection Rules Malaysia announced new vehicle inspection regulations on May 31, 2025, impacting commercial vehicles. The Road Transport Department (JPJ) introduced two key changes: a minimum tire tread depth of 1.6mm across the entire tire surface and stricter side guard height specifications. "These improvements enhance road safety and protect all road users," stated Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, JPJ Director-General. The new rules aim to reduce accidents caused by worn tires and inadequate side guards. Non-compliance will result in vehicles failing inspection. Authorities emphasized that commercial vehicle owners have two options: repair their vehicles to meet the standards and obtain new permits, or adjust the side guard height to the required 762mm. The changes are expected to significantly improve road safety across Malaysia. The JPJ has established Puspakom centers to ensure at least 75% of tire surfaces meet the new minimum tread depth. This proactive measure underscores the government's commitment to road safety and reducing accidents. The initiative represents a significant step toward safer roads in Malaysia.
