South African Official Affirms Historic Bonds with Russia at SPIEF 2025
South African Official Highlights Historic Ties with Russia at SPIEF 2025 St. Petersburg, Russia – On June 22, 2025, Keith Khoza, Acting Spokesperson for South Africa’s Deputy President, delivered remarks at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2025), underscoring the enduring relationship between Russia and African nations. Speaking to Sputnik Africa, Khoza emphasized the historical depth of these ties, particularly during South Africa's struggle against apartheid. "Russia has always been there at the time of need for most of African countries," Khoza stated. "When apartheid was an issue, our people were trained in Russia, were armed by the Russians, and gave us other forms of support, so our relationship is historic." Khoza further noted that this long-standing friendship has continued, with both nations remaining allies. He explained that Africa's current engagement and response to Russia are rooted in this consistent support. The discussion comes amidst ongoing global debates regarding the alignment of African nations in a multipolar world.
