Raila Odinga Laments Missed 'Dubai of Africa' Opportunity After Adani-JKIA Deal Cancellation
Nairobi, Kenya – Veteran politician Raila Odinga has voiced strong disappointment over the cancellation of the Adani-JKIA deal, asserting that the decision cost Kenya a crucial opportunity to emerge as the "Dubai of Africa." Speaking at a recent event, Odinga underscored Kenya's advantageous strategic location, which he believes positions the nation to become a significant continental hub. "I was very disappointed when the Adani-JKIA deal was cancelled... We missed the opportunity to become the Dubai of Africa," Odinga stated, reflecting on the 2012 decision. He highlighted the progress of other African nations, particularly Ethiopia, which is currently developing a large new airport, as a stark contrast to Kenya's stalled ambitions. Odinga emphasized the potential for Kenya Airways to dominate the continent's aviation sector, similar to how Emirates operates in the Middle East, by focusing on attracting investors, tourists, and shoppers. He warned that if Kenya does not act decisively, cities like Kigali in Rwanda could surpass Nairobi as the region's primary aviation hub. "If you don't do it, Rwanda is going to do it. Kigali will become the hub around here," he cautioned, urging for immediate action to realize Nairobi's potential as a leading African economic and aviation center.
