A recent update to the popular social media platform Instagram, introducing a new map feature, has sparked considerable backlash and privacy concerns among its user base. The update, which reportedly rolled out without prior prior warning, allows users to view the locations of others they follow, drawing comparisons to similar features on platforms like Snapchat. One user, carter, voiced strong disapproval in a widely circulated video, labeling the update "dangerous." He criticized Instagram's perceived tendency to replicate features from other social media apps, citing examples such as "stories" (Snapchat), "reels" (TikTok), and "threads" (Twitter). Carter emphasized the critical difference between Instagram and platforms like Snapchat: "People on your Snapchat are usually people you know in person, real-life people that you've seen and interacted with. People on Instagram, I don't know half of the people that I follow." He questioned the rationale behind allowing potentially unknown followers to access one's location. Comments on the video echoed these sentiments, with many users expressing alarm and immediately checking their privacy settings. One user stated, "As someone with a stalker, that ish was turned off QUICKLY." Another highlighted the potential danger for vulnerable individuals: "The second I found out I went running to tell my neighbor, who is a single mom hiding her kids from her abusive ex. This could have SO EASILY put not only her but her young children in EXTREME danger." The sentiment among many users appears to be that the map feature is unnecessary and poses significant privacy risks, further contributing to a growing dissatisfaction with Instagram's direction.
