Manitoba Wildfires: Urgent Plea for Hotel Rooms as 17,000 Evacuees Seek Shelter
Wildfires displace thousands in Manitoba, prompting urgent call for hotel accommodations. The Pimicikamak Cree Nation Chief David Monias has issued a desperate plea to the Manitoba government to utilize the Emergency Measures Act to secure hotel rooms for the more than 17,000 people who have been displaced by the ongoing wildfires. Evacuees are currently being housed in community centers and hockey arenas, conditions that Chief Monias described as inadequate. "We need to find more comfortable places for people to stay," said Chief Monias in a video statement shared on social media. The video depicts the harrowing scenes of evacuees arriving in Winnipeg, many with their belongings piled on carts. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew acknowledged the province's need to find more suitable housing, stating that "nobody wants to sleep on a cot for more than a day or two, even in an emergency." The government is working to address the urgent housing needs of the evacuees, but the scale of the crisis underscores the need for swift and decisive action.
