Manitoba Wildfires Force Mass Evacuations: Thousands Seek Shelter Amidst Crisis
Thousands of Manitobans have been forced to evacuate their homes due to raging wildfires in the northern part of the province. The Canadian Armed Forces, the federal government, and the Canadian Red Cross are working together to safely relocate more than 17,000 people. Evacuation shelters have been set up in Winnipeg, with one evacuee stating, "It's okay, but it's kind of crowded." Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham anticipates the opening of a fourth shelter soon. Meanwhile, some evacuees have been sent to hotels in Niagara Falls, Ontario, as the province struggles to find enough space for everyone. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew says the province is working to free up as much space as possible. "Ontario has opened up several thousand rooms, and that's been really positive to see." he stated. The situation underscores the devastating impact of wildfires and the collaborative efforts to support those affected.
