Ghana's New Labour Export Program: A Hope for Youth Employment?
Ghana Launches Labour Export Program to Boost Youth Employment Ghanaian President John Mahama recently announced the launch of the Ghana Labour Export Programme, a significant initiative aimed at addressing youth unemployment by creating international job opportunities. The program will facilitate partnerships with countries facing labor shortages, offering Ghanaian workers opportunities for temporary employment abroad. "We are negotiating with several countries to export some of our professionals to work on fixed-term contracts abroad," President Mahama stated in a recent address. The program encompasses a wide range of professions, including agricultural workers, construction workers, electricians, welders, mechanics, health workers, chefs, caterers, drivers, and warehouse supervisors. A contract has already been signed with one unnamed country for the export of 2,000 temporary workers, demonstrating early success. The program emphasizes fair selection across all 16 regions of Ghana, ensuring equitable access to opportunities. This initiative holds significant potential for economic growth and youth empowerment in Ghana, offering a pathway to improved livelihoods and international experience for many young Ghanaians.
