Guatemala Faces Widespread Road Blockades as Protests Continue
Guatemala City, Guatemala – On Thursday, July 10, 2025, traffic authorities confirmed ongoing road blockades across Guatemala's capital and various national highways, leading to significant traffic disruptions. The protests, primarily organized by the Union of Education Workers (STEG), include teachers and health workers expressing their discontent with government decisions. Among the key grievances is the executive's decision regarding a 5% salary increase for education personnel. Protesters have maintained these measures for over a month, including a sustained encampment in the Plaza de la Constitución in the capital. The General Directorate of Road Protection and Security (PROVIAL) reported that as of 9:40 AM, closures were affecting 24 points on major routes, including CA-9 North, CA-1 West, CA-2 West, CA-10, CA-14, CA-13, CA-2 East, the Northern Transversal Strip, Guatemala City, CA-1 East, CA-9 South, RN-9N, and CA-9 South A. Commuters are advised to seek alternative routes due to the prolonged disruptions.
