GUATEMALA CITY – A High-Risk Court today rejected a petition for a plea bargain from María Fernanda Bonilla and José Luis Marroquín, who are implicated in the 2021 murder of university student Melissa Palacios. The court's decision, announced on Monday, August 4th, stated that the request for accepting charges was invalid because it was not personally signed by the defendants, but rather by their lawyers. The case, which originated in Chiquimula, was recently transferred to the High-Risk Court in Guatemala City. Judge Karol Jessica Verganza has scheduled an intermediate hearing for September 2nd, where the legal status of Bonilla and Marroquín will be definitively determined. In compliance with the court's order, the penitentiary system confirmed that both individuals were transferred in mid-July from the preventive detention center in Los Jocotes, Zacapa, to a detention facility in Guatemala City. This transfer ensures their presence for future court proceedings at the Torre de Tribunales. The ruling underscores the ongoing legal process in this high-profile case, which has drawn considerable public attention.
