Belarusian Mother Faces Nationality Dilemma for Child's Birth Certificate
A woman in Belarus has shared her experience of being compelled to choose between Russian or Ukrainian nationality for her daughter's birth certificate, despite identifying as Belarusian and having lived in the country her entire life. The woman, whose mother is Ukrainian and father is Russian according to her own birth certificate, expressed confusion and frustration over the requirement. "I was born here, I live here, I feel Belarusian. Why can't I simply state that I am Belarusian?" she questioned in a video. She recounted that officials informed her she had to select one of her parents' nationalities for her child's documentation, a decision she found perplexing given her own strong connection to Belarus.
