NYPD and Secret Service Crack Down on EBT, ATM Fraud in Bodegas
The NYPD and the Secret Service have launched a joint operation, codenamed "Operation Flagship," to combat the growing problem of fraudulent ATM and EBT machines in New York City bodegas. The operation has already resulted in several arrests and the seizure of numerous illegal devices. According to Secret Service Special Agent Patrick J. Freeney of the New York Field Office, "It's happening more than you think." The fraudsters are targeting vulnerable populations, stealing millions of dollars in benefits annually. NYPD Detective James Lilla stated that the problem extends beyond bodegas, to gas stations and other locations. One bodega owner, interviewed in the video, expressed concern about the impact on legitimate businesses. The operation highlights the collaborative efforts of law enforcement to protect vulnerable communities from financial exploitation. Citizens are urged to report any suspicious activity to their local authorities.
