«Урожай кофе в Беларуси в этом году плохой»

MINSK, Belarus – The soaring cost of coffee in Belarus has ignited widespread public debate and concern, fueled by a viral social media video that starkly contrasts local supermarket prices with those observed in European Union nations. A recent TikTok video, posted by a Minsk resident expressing visible dismay at the price tags on coffee shelves, quickly garnered nearly 500,000 views and over 5,000 comments, becoming a focal point for discussion on the nation's economic realities. The video highlights significant price discrepancies, such as a pack of Dallmayr coffee reportedly costing 109 Belarusian rubles in local stores, while the same product is available for approximately 55 Belarusian rubles (equivalent to 15 euros) in Germany. This stark comparison has led many Belarusians to question the factors contributing to such a substantial price gap, with some comments directly attributing the high costs to domestic economic policies and high excise taxes. "The excise tax in Belarus is high, and import preferences are only for those close to the government, that's the result and prices," one commenter stated, reflecting public frustration. Globally, the video notes that commodity prices for Arabica coffee reached an unprecedented record in the second half of October, surpassing $9,500 per ton. This global surge is largely attributed to anxieties surrounding the Arabica harvest in Brazil, a key coffee-producing nation, and the imposition of 50-percent import duties on coffee by the United States in July of this year. However, the report also acknowledges that, historically, coffee prices in Belarus have consistently been higher than those in its Western neighboring countries, suggesting that while global trends play a role, internal market dynamics contribute significantly to the current situation. The ongoing public discourse underscores a broader concern about the cost of living and consumer purchasing power within the country.
