Philippines Launches €20/Kilo Rice Program for Low-Income Families
The Philippines: Government to Supply Discounted Rice to Low-Income Families The Philippine government is taking steps to alleviate the financial burden on low-income families by providing subsidized rice. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture (DA), announced a program to supply rice at €20 per kilo to accredited retailers serving DSWD beneficiaries classified as "food poor." DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian stated in a recent press briefing, "Those classified as 'food poor' beneficiaries usually avail food commodities from DSWD-registered or accredited retailers. Amid the government's €20 per kilo of rice program, the DA would provide rice to these listed retailers." This initiative aims to make affordable rice accessible to those most in need. The program will initially provide rice to approximately 1,000 retailers. This collaborative effort demonstrates the government's commitment to ensuring food security for vulnerable populations during times of economic uncertainty. The initiative is expected to significantly impact the lives of many Filipino families.
