Philippines Rice Subsidy Program Faces Funding Crisis
The Philippine government's ambitious P20/kilo rice program, designed to alleviate food insecurity, is facing a critical funding shortfall. The Department of Agriculture (DA) has requested P18 billion to sustain the program in 2026, but according to DA spokesperson Arnel de Mesa, only around P10 billion is likely to be approved. "The requested amount for next year is 18 billion pesos, but it appears only around 10 billion of that will be granted," de Mesa stated. Despite this financial constraint, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. remains committed to the program, intending to maintain it until the end of his term in 2028. The DA plans to expand the program's reach to areas with high poverty levels, ensuring that vulnerable populations continue to benefit from affordable rice. The subsidized rice is currently distributed through Kadiwa stores, reaching minimum wage earners and other vulnerable groups. The program's long-term sustainability hinges on securing adequate funding, a challenge that highlights the complexities of balancing social welfare with fiscal responsibility. The success of this initiative will significantly impact the lives of millions of Filipinos.
