Philippines Allocates ₱18 Billion for Rice Subsidy Program
The Philippine government announced a plan to allocate ₱18 billion in next year's budget to subsidize rice, selling it at ₱20 per kilogram. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on minimum wage earners, who will begin accessing the subsidized rice this month. The program's success, however, hinges on effective distribution and sufficient supply. Asec. Arnel de Mesa of the Department of Agriculture explained the government's strategy, stating, "For the subsidy this year, it's 5 billion; the request for next year is 18 billion." The government will collaborate with local government units (LGUs) and Kadiwa stores to ensure widespread access. The current market price of rice from the NFA is ₱33 per kilogram, requiring a ₱13 subsidy per kilogram. The national government and LGUs will each cover ₱6.50 of the subsidy. The program aims to reach 60 million Filipinos. The DSWD will also distribute the subsidized rice to vulnerable communities. While the program is ambitious, concerns remain about its ability to reach all Filipinos and the potential impact on the rice industry. However, the initiative represents a significant step towards ensuring food security for many Filipinos.
