Ghanaian Foundation Tackles Period Poverty with Education and Sanitary Pad Distribution
Osu Salem Girls JHS in Ghana received a donation of sanitary pads from WAWEF, a West African women's empowerment foundation, as part of World Menstrual Hygiene Day. The event was more than just a distribution; it was an educational initiative aimed at breaking the stigma around menstruation. Janet Kwakye, WAWEF's Programs Director, stated, "Menstruation is usually something that people feel ashamed of. After today's program, we hope that we can break that stigma and empower them to become more confident." Frank O. Kanti, an executive member of WAWEF, emphasized the importance of open conversations between parents and daughters about menstrual hygiene. This initiative demonstrates WAWEF's commitment to promoting girls' education, health, and well-being, ensuring they can attend school with dignity and confidence. The distribution of sanitary pads is a practical step towards addressing period poverty, a significant issue for many young girls in West Africa.
