SEVILLE, Spain – Renowned sculptor Juan Manuel Miñarro recently opened the doors of his Seville workshop, offering a rare glimpse into his artistic world and the meticulous craft of religious imagery. The visit, documented by Alberto Maldonado, highlighted Miñarro's dedication to anatomical precision and his unique approach to creating sacred figures. During the tour, Miñarro showcased several significant pieces, including a sculpture of San Pedro commissioned by the Brotherhood of the Prayer in the Garden from Cabra. He also presented an anatomical crucifix model, a key component of his doctoral thesis, emphasizing the fundamental role of human anatomy in achieving realism and expression in his works. "What we do is the architecture of the human body; it's basic," Miñarro stated, underscoring the scientific rigor behind his artistic creations. Miñarro also spoke candidly about the relationships among sculptors, describing a healthy competitive spirit that drives artistic excellence. "It's about surpassing your master or surpassing yourself," he explained, noting that this professional rivalry ultimately benefits the art form. He expressed satisfaction with the high quality of work being produced by contemporary imagineros in Seville. The sculptor also shared a lighter moment, introducing his parrot, Salomón, whom he playfully described as "very wise" and prone to "naughty words" because Miñarro himself teaches them. The day concluded with Miñarro enjoying coffee in Seville, where he unexpectedly encountered colleagues, reinforcing the close-knit community of artists in the city. Miñarro expressed gratitude for the opportunity to share his passion, stating, "If it weren't for the imagineros, there would be no Holy Week." His insights illuminate the profound connection between art, faith, and tradition in Seville's vibrant cultural landscape.
