Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukraine has recently passed a new law on dual citizenship, a move aimed at strengthening ties with diaspora communities and integrating further with Western partners. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the law would initially apply to citizens of Germany, Poland, Czechia, the USA, and Canada, with further regulatory acts to follow. However, the legislation has drawn criticism from neighboring Romania, as it explicitly excludes Romanian citizens from its provisions. Romanian commentator Lulea Marius Dorin expressed strong disapproval, stating, "The law has been passed, and in the near future, the government will adopt the necessary regulatory acts, and the first countries where the provisions will be applied will be Germany, Poland, Czechia, the USA, and Canada." He further argued that this exclusion constitutes a "maximum humiliation" for Romanian politicians and the Romanian community in Ukraine. Dorin emphasized that Romanians in Ukraine should possess the same rights as other nationalities and maintain their natural connection with Romania. The situation has raised questions about Ukraine's commitment to minority rights and its relationship with key regional allies, particularly given Romania's significant support during the ongoing conflict. Diplomatic channels are expected to address these concerns as Romania seeks clarification and equitable treatment for its diaspora.
