An aviation expert and cabin crew member has shed light on a vital, yet often misunderstood, air safety protocol: the prohibition against inflating life vests while still inside an aircraft. The expert, Majoros Mirtill, explained that this rule is in place for two primary reasons crucial for passenger survival during an emergency. Firstly, inflating a life vest prematurely would significantly increase a passenger's bulk, making it extremely difficult to navigate the narrow aisles and exit points of an aircraft during an evacuation. In a high-stress emergency, every second counts, and any obstruction can have severe consequences. Secondly, if an aircraft were to crash into water and the cabin began to fill, an inflated life vest would cause the wearer to float upwards, potentially trapping them against the ceiling. This scenario drastically reduces a person's ability to escape the submerged cabin. Majoros Mirtill referenced the tragic Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash in 2019, where some passengers reportedly inflated their life vests prematurely. This action, she noted, contributed to their inability to exit the aircraft, highlighting the grave importance of adhering to the safety instructions provided by cabin crew. Passengers are advised to only inflate their life vests once they have exited the aircraft and are in the water, ensuring maximum safety and efficiency during an emergency.
