Klang Port Bust: RM3.5 Million Smuggling Ring Dismantled Port Klang, Malaysia – In a significant victory against smuggling, the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) Selangor branch recently intercepted a large-scale attempt to smuggle various goods valued at RM3.5 million, including duties and taxes. The operation, which took place at Port Klang, resulted in the seizure of a diverse range of commodities. Among the items confiscated were 12,800 kilograms of rice (valued at RM217,600 with RM87,400 in duties), 295 kilograms of chewing tobacco (valued at RM23,600 with RM42,185 in duties), and 21 units of clothing dryers (valued at RM474,000 with RM47,400 in duties). Additionally, a substantial amount of scrap metal and alcoholic beverages were seized. The total value of the seized goods, including duties and taxes, reached RM3.5 million. "The JKDM Selangor is committed to combating smuggling activities and protecting the country's economic interests," stated Raizam Setapa @ Mustapha, Assistant Director-General of Customs (Enforcement). The investigation is ongoing under Section 135(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967, which carries penalties of up to ten times the value of the goods or a maximum of five years imprisonment, or both. This successful operation highlights the JKDM's ongoing efforts to maintain security and prevent illegal trade in Malaysia. The substantial value of the seized goods underscores the scale of the smuggling attempt and the importance of continued vigilance in combating such activities.
