MINSK, Belarus – A Belarusian mother of four, Elena Semutkina, has publicly appealed to President Alexander Lukashenka, highlighting systemic failures in the enforcement of alimony payments across the country. Semutkina, whose ex-husband is a wealthy businessman in Gomel, stated that despite winning multiple court cases, her children have not received any financial support for an extended period due to the alleged inaction of enforcement agencies. In her video appeal, Semutkina detailed the extensive time, effort, and financial resources she has expended navigating the legal system. She emphasized that court decisions, even when favorable to mothers, are frequently not executed, leaving women to bear the full financial and emotional burden of raising children alone. "The enforcement agencies are not working, thereby failing to fulfill the requirements of the law," Semutkina asserted. She extended her appeal to all women and mothers in Belarus who face similar challenges, particularly those whose ex-partners work unofficially or abroad, making it difficult to track income. Semutkina urged them to share their stories in the comments section, hoping that collective voices would prompt governmental action. She also addressed men, reminding them of their responsibilities to their children. Semutkina connected the issue to the country's demographic situation, suggesting that the lack of legal protection for single mothers contributes to women's reluctance to have more children. "Looking at the statistics, we can understand that the demographic situation in our country leaves much to be desired. In my opinion, women are afraid to give birth because such a story happens to every fourth woman," she said. Her call for transparency and accountability aims to protect the rights of children, asserting that "there are no other people's children."
