US Shopper Faces $360 Tariff on Luxury Online Purchase, Highlights Hidden Costs of International E-commerce
A US shopper recently shared her experience of an unexpected $360 tariff on an online purchase of luxury goods, highlighting the hidden costs consumers can face when buying internationally. The woman, who runs a business, recounted purchasing Margiela boots for $800 from the online retailer SSENSE. However, she was later informed by USPS that an additional $360 tariff was due, increasing her total expenditure to over $1100. While familiar with tariffs in a business context, she expressed surprise at this personal charge from SSENSE, stating, "I've never had a tariff from SSENSE." The incident underscores the importance for consumers to be aware of potential import duties and taxes when making cross-border purchases. Fortunately, SSENSE has reportedly offered a resolution, allowing her to return the item.
