Islantilla's "Walk of Fame" Promenade: A Star-Studded Municipal Border

Islantilla, a popular resort area in Huelva, Spain, is home to a distinctive "Paseo de la Fama" (Walk of Fame) that also serves an unusual administrative function: it marks the municipal boundary between the towns of Lepe and Isla Cristina. A recent video by local resident Miguelon provided a nocturnal tour of this unique promenade, shedding light on its dual identity. Miguelon began his video by introducing the location, stating, "Here I present a promenade of Islantilla, the Walk of Fame." He noted that while Islantilla has many similar promenades, this one is "very particular because a film festival is celebrated here, and there are many plaques dedicated to many actors." Indeed, the pathway is adorned with star-shaped tributes to renowned Spanish cinematic figures, including Antonio Resines, Carmen Machi, Ana Torrent, Miguel Rellán, Imanol Arias, Ana Fernández, and Carlos Hipólito, as well as director Jaime Chávarri. These plaques, commemorating the "Premio Luis Ciges" and "Camaleón de Honor" awards, highlight the area's connection to the arts. The most intriguing aspect, as Miguelon demonstrated, is the invisible line running down the center of the promenade. "If we walk on this side, we are officially in the municipal territory of Lepe," he explained. "And if I go this way, curiously, I am in the municipal territory of Isla Cristina." He humorously illustrated the practical implications, adding, "If I twisted my ankle on this side, I would have to go to Isla Cristina's town hall. And if something happened to me here, I would have to go to Lepe's town hall." This unique arrangement reflects Islantilla's status as a "mancomunidad," a joint municipal entity, allowing both towns to share the responsibility and benefits of managing the resort. The "Paseo de la Fama" thus stands not only as a cultural landmark but also as a tangible symbol of inter-municipal cooperation.
