Yatranka River Contaminated: Mass Fish Deaths Reported in Grodno Region

YAROSHICHI, Belarus - On July 21, 2025, residents of Yaroshichi village in the Novogrudok district, Grodno region, reported a potential environmental disaster to the Novogrudok City and District Inspectorate for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection. Concerns were raised regarding the possible contamination of the Yatranka River with manure-containing wastewater originating from the Yaroshichi dairy farm, which is owned by SRDUP Svityaz. Upon receiving the report, the Inspectorate promptly dispatched specialists to the site. A visual inspection confirmed that effluent containing manure was indeed flowing into the Yatranka River due to the natural terrain. This unchecked discharge has led to a significant environmental impact, with a mass death of fish observed in the affected water body. In response to the confirmed pollution, environmental specialists have collected samples of both water and soil from the affected area. These samples will undergo thorough analysis to determine the extent of contamination by chemical substances. The Inspectorate has stated that following the completion of the investigation, a legal assessment will be conducted concerning the economic entities and officials responsible for this environmental incident.
