Finland Builds 200km Border Fence with Russia

Finland constructs a new border fence with Russia to counter increased migration. The 200km long fence, standing 4.5 meters high and topped with barbed wire, is part of Finland's efforts to manage the flow of migrants from Russia. The fence is equipped with video cameras, sensors, loudspeakers, and lighting. According to Samuell Silvanen, head of the operational department of the Eastern Border Guard District, "We have the longest border of all EU states with Russia, so it's a higher-risk area for us." Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. This project follows Finland's closure of all border crossing points with Russia in 2023 in response to the increased flow of migrants.
