Kitten Rescued After 18-Hour Ordeal in Underground Pipe
Long Island Kitten Rescued After 18 Hours Trapped in Pipe A heartwarming story of animal rescue unfolded in Long Island, New York, on June 9, 2025. A resident of the Bay Shore area heard faint cries coming from under her backyard deck and alerted firefighters. Firefighters located the source of the noise: a tiny kitten trapped in a downspout pipe, approximately 3 to 4.5 meters below ground. The kitten had reportedly been trapped for 18 hours. "It was a very delicate situation," said one of the firefighters involved in the rescue. "The kitten was scared and exhausted, but we managed to get it out safely." Using recorded kitten meows played through a device, rescuers were able to lure the kitten close enough to be extracted using a catch pole. The grey and white kitten, now named Piper, was then transferred to NYC Second Chance Rescue for veterinary care. A Facebook post on June 8th announced Piper's happy ending – she was adopted into a loving home. This rescue demonstrates the compassion and resourcefulness of firefighters and animal rescuers. It serves as a reminder of the importance of community support in protecting vulnerable animals.
