Almaty Market Vendors Decry Blocked Access, Hurting Businesses
ALMATY, Kazakhstan – Vendors at a local market in Almaty are voicing urgent concerns over persistent access issues, claiming that pathways to the second floor are routinely obstructed by merchandise, particularly on weekends. This ongoing problem is significantly impacting their ability to conduct business and support their families. "Today, even with fewer people, this is the situation! On Saturdays and Sundays, the area below this floor is completely blocked, preventing people from reaching the second floor," stated a frustrated vendor, who uploaded a video documenting the blocked passage. The footage shows a crowded market aisle with goods spilling into the walkway, making it difficult for customers to navigate. The vendor, who identified herself as Nagima, expressed exasperation, stating, "We are tired of telling and warning the market's tenants. Who should we write to, who should we go to? Tell us!" She emphasized that many vendors on the second floor are struggling, despite paying rent and having families to support. "No one is sitting here for free!" she added. According to Nagima, even requests to clear paths for their customers have gone unheeded. "Until now, we have remained silent out of respect for Kazakh customs. But now, this matter is with you," she declared, indicating a plea for public attention and intervention. The situation underscores a broader challenge for market management to ensure fair operating conditions and accessibility for both vendors and customers.
