Serbian Women Honor Sveta Petka: Traditions of Protection and Healing
BELGRADE, Serbia – October 26, 2025 – Orthodox Christians across Serbia observed Sveta Petka, or Saint Paraskevi, a revered protector of women, with traditional customs aimed at preserving family well-being. On this day, women are traditionally advised to avoid demanding household chores to ensure health and happiness for their families. Young girls participate in a long-standing custom of collecting flowers to adorn their homes, a practice believed to invite peace and harmony into the household. The holiday is also associated with the belief that wearing new attire brings joy throughout the year. Many women, including mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends, journey to churches and monasteries dedicated to Sveta Petka. These sacred sites often feature springs of healing water, which believers claim can cure ailments and protect against illness. Historically, numerous miracles, particularly healings, have been attributed to Sveta Petka's day. Devotees who seek the saint's intercession often observe a seven-day fast and present offerings at churches as a sign of gratitude and reverence.
