A New Zealand climate activist recently took to TikTok to share why clean energy is the future of power — and job security — for the country.
A recent video from New Zealand highlights the economic benefits of investing in clean energy over fossil fuels. The content creator, Nate Wilbourne, argued that transitioning to renewable energy sources could generate significantly more jobs and provide a substantial boost to the New Zealand economy. Wilbourne cited a report from the United Kingdom's Energy Research Centre, which found that "investment in low carbon energy and energy efficiency can deliver more jobs than gas and coal power generation." He further elaborated that renewable energy can provide three times as many jobs per approximately 2 million New Zealand dollars of investment compared to the fossil fuel industry. These jobs, according to Wilbourne, include roles in constructing wind turbines, installing transmission wires, and setting up solar panels and heat pumps. He emphasized that these positions are local and offer long-term job security, benefiting communities across New Zealand. Wilbourne concluded by advocating for a forward-thinking approach to energy policy, moving away from justifying fossil fuel reliance in 2025.
