Investigation Reveals Energy Companies' Role in Major Blackout, Calls for Sanctions and Public Ownership

Madrid, Spain – A recent investigation into the widespread energy blackout on April 28 has revealed critical failures by energy companies and the system operator, Red Eléctrica. Rubén Sánchez, a journalist and activist with FACUA, a prominent consumer organization, stated that energy companies engaged in practices to cut costs, ultimately compromising the stability of the power supply. According to Sánchez, the investigation concluded that a combination of factors led to the incident. "The operator of the system, Red Eléctrica, decided that on that day, the number of plants capable of regulating voltage would be the lowest since the beginning of the year," Sánchez explained. He added that several power plants either failed to respond adequately to Red Eléctrica's directives or, in some cases, acted contrary to them, worsening the situation. Sánchez emphasized that these companies are compensated for ensuring supply, yet they neglected their obligations. "We pay a very expensive fixed fee on every electricity bill to guarantee supply every hour of the day, but the large companies in the sector have dedicated themselves to playing with the operation of their plants to cut costs until, by stretching the rope too much, they broke it, causing a gigantic blackout," he asserted. FACUA is calling on the government to strengthen controls over the energy sector and initiate sanctioning proceedings against companies that disregarded their responsibilities. Sánchez stressed the importance of public oversight in the energy sector. "What has happened should lead the executive to assume once and for all that we need to rescue for the public what should never have been in private hands," he stated, advocating for a public energy generation company to prevent fraudulent practices and inflated tariffs.
