Chinatown Businesses Unite with Law Enforcement to Combat Rising Crime

Oakland Chinatown Businesses Appeal for Increased Police Presence After String of Break-ins Oakland, CA – June 4, 2025 – Business owners in Oakland’s Chinatown organized a walk with law enforcement officials today to highlight the devastating effects of rising crime on their livelihoods. The demonstration, which included representatives from the Oakland Police Department (OPD), California Highway Patrol (CHP), and BART Police, aimed to raise awareness and advocate for increased police visibility in the area. "Every two years, my store is robbed," said Des To, owner of Alice Bakery Café, recounting the multiple break-ins her business has suffered, including an attempted burglary just last month. The video shows the damage caused to her shop’s windows. The event was organized by Stewart Chen of the Oakland Chinatown Improvement Council. He stated that while violent crime is down in Oakland, petty crime remains a significant concern for businesses struggling to survive. Victor Flores, BART District 7 Director, emphasized BART’s commitment to being good partners to help uplift security and economic vitality in the community. The joint agency walk underscored the need for collaboration between various law enforcement agencies to address the ongoing challenges faced by Chinatown businesses. The increased police presence, though welcomed, is only part of the solution. Chen stressed the need for continued support from the city and other agencies to ensure long-term safety and prosperity for the community.
