DAKAR, Senegal – A recent social media post by tourist Nobik Dil has brought attention to the alleged practice of taxi drivers overcharging visitors in Dakar, Senegal. In a video uploaded on August 22, 2025, Dil documented his experience attempting to take a taxi for a short, two-minute journey. Dil stated that the standard fare for such a distance should be approximately 500 CFA francs. However, upon reaching his destination, the driver reportedly demanded 2000 CFA francs. Dil engaged in a negotiation, eventually settling on 1000 CFA francs. He suggested that the presence of his camera might have influenced the driver to reduce the price. “They want to charge you 20 times more,” Dil explained in his video, referencing the common issue faced by tourists. He further highlighted the disparity by noting, “Yesterday, a 20-minute ride cost me 2000, the same amount this guy wanted for two minutes.” The video has sparked discussion online regarding fair pricing for tourists in the region.
