Medellin Police Arrest Fake Priest Who Defrauded Hundreds Medellin, Colombia – In a recent operation, Medellin police apprehended a man posing as a priest who allegedly defrauded over 200 individuals across three Colombian departments. The suspect, who authorities have not yet publicly identified, is accused of offering lucrative employment opportunities, then disappearing after collecting significant sums of money from his victims. "This individual was a nomad, constantly changing residences to avoid detection by his victims," stated a spokesperson for the Medellin prosecutor's office. "His actions represent a clear danger to the community." The investigation revealed victims in Buenaventura, Choco; Palmira, Cartago; and Tumaco. The fake priest allegedly promised salaries of 1,700,000 pesos per month for jobs as packers and delivery drivers, and then requested up-front payments of around 400,000 pesos for "social security." The total amount of money he allegedly collected is a staggering 88,638,976 pesos. In one recorded phone call, the suspect is heard threatening an elderly victim with dire consequences if she failed to make the requested payment. This threat, along with the numerous reported victims, led to his arrest and subsequent imprisonment for aggravated fraud. The arrest serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the importance of verifying employment opportunities before making financial commitments.
