Zacatecas, Mexico – The state of Zacatecas has reported its first human case of rabies in nearly 40 years, confirmed by Dr. Osvaldo Pinedo, Secretary of Health for the Zacatecas government. The patient is a 17-year-old girl from Valparaíso who was bitten on the finger by a skunk in Mesquital del Oro in June. The young woman is currently receiving intensive care at the IMSS General Hospital No. 1, where her condition is described as grave. Rabies has a long incubation period, ranging from weeks to months. Specialized personnel from both federal and state governments are actively analyzing the case. Their efforts are focused on determining the necessary actions to prevent further spread, including implementing a containment strategy and an intensive vaccination campaign in the affected region.
