A Spanish farmer has voiced strong criticism against European Union regulations, asserting that they are directly responsible for the increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires across Spain. Speaking from a parched, overgrown field, the farmer, accompanied by his horse, highlighted the historical role of extensive livestock farming in maintaining clear land and preventing the accumulation of dry vegetation. "Spain is burning on all four sides due to a lack of extensive livestock," the farmer stated passionately. He explained that in his village, there were once three butcher shops, each with its own herd, and these animals would graze daily, keeping the mountains, boundaries, and fields clear. "These regulations from Europe have caused us to get rid of our livestock," he added, emphasizing that the current policies force Spain to import meat, further undermining local farming. He argued that applying the same agricultural policies to Spain as to Nordic countries, France, or Germany is "unviable" given Spain's significantly hotter and drier climate, especially during summer. "Years like this, when it has rained so much, everything is full of brush," he noted, indicating the heightened fire risk. The farmer called for a return to common-sense practices that allow farmers the freedom to raise sheep, cows, or other animals to graze the land, asserting that this is the only effective solution to prevent future wildfires. He lamented the bureaucracy that he believes is destroying the country's traditional way of life and exacerbating environmental challenges.
