CÁCERES, SPAIN – An ecological intervention aimed at eradicating an invasive fish species in the Alcollarín reservoir in Cáceres has reportedly resulted in a catastrophic environmental disaster. The Ministry for Ecological Transition (MITECO), through the Guadiana Hydrographic Confederation, undertook the operation to eliminate the Pseudorasbora parva, an invasive fish species originating from China. The operation involved completely emptying the reservoir, a body of water that was at 100% capacity in May, holding 50 billion liters and serving as a habitat for native fish and numerous aquatic birds. This site was also a popular destination for fishermen and tourists. However, the initiative, which cost over one million euros, has been labeled a 'failure' by local sources and experts. Nets deployed to capture the invasive fish proved ineffective, leading to thousands of fish, including native species, perishing in the contaminated, stagnant waters. Furthermore, a significant number of the invasive Pseudorasbora parva reportedly escaped downstream, further colonizing the Alcollarín, Ruecas, and Guadiana rivers. The aftermath is described as an 'unprecedented environmental disaster' for the region, characterized by polluted waters, a massive die-off of native species, an unbearable stench, and the loss of a valuable habitat crucial for local fauna and rural tourism. Residents and environmental experts are demanding accountability, characterizing the ministry's actions as an 'attack against nature' and calling for those responsible to be held liable.
