An Oregon woman takes to TikTok to share a realization she had: she lives in a "sundown town," amongst racists who live out in the open.
A resident of Astoria, Oregon, recently shared her shock and dismay after discovering her town's history as a "sundown town." In a video uploaded on July 24, 2025, the woman, identified as Rae Holbrook, expressed her upset, stating she believed Oregon to be a progressive state. She recounted learning about sundown towns through another video about a truck driver in Florida and then looking up a map of such locations, only to find Astoria listed as a "certain" sundown town. She noted the lack of Black people in the area as a corroborating observation. Holbrook also mentioned hearing about Lake Oswego being referred to as "Lake No Negro." In her emotional address, she condemned racist ideologies, asserting that skin color does not determine a person's worth and calling those who believe otherwise "fucking stupid." Her video brings attention to a dark chapter in American history and its lingering effects, particularly in regions not typically associated with such discriminatory practices.
