Water Meter Thefts Plague Santa Cruz Neighborhood: Over 20 Stolen in One Week
SANTA CRUZ, Bolivia – Residents of the Plan 3,000 neighborhood in Santa Cruz are living in fear as a wave of water meter thefts plagues their community. According to reports from affected families, more than 20 water meters have been stolen in a single week across three streets, leaving many without essential water services. Ademar Sánchez, a local resident, stated, "Almost every night, the meters are new, all blue. They come and take them in the early morning. You clearly see the stream of water running." Another resident, Bernardina Rojas, recounted hearing motorcycles and cars during the night, suggesting that organized groups are behind the thefts. She expressed concerns that the stolen meters, often made of copper, are being melted down for their valuable metal. Community members are not only frustrated by the financial burden of replacing the meters but also by the constant fear for their safety. "Nobody is sure if they will help us follow them, or if they will kill us further down the road," Rojas added, highlighting the danger involved in confronting the perpetrators. The residents are urging authorities to intervene and provide a lasting solution to these persistent robberies.
