SANTA CRUZ, Bolivia – Residents of Santa Cruz are grappling with a surge in criminal activity, with over 20 reported incidents of robberies and assaults in recent days, sparking widespread panic and calls for increased police intervention. The southern zone of the city has been particularly affected, with citizens expressing profound fear and demanding more visible police patrols. One resident recounted, "We are afraid to even walk in the street." Another shared, "They are not respecting anyone. I also believe this is due to the economic situation, because there is no work in our country. We are in a disaster. The authorities do nothing, and if the police catch them, the judges release them." Incidents include armed individuals on motorcycles intercepting pedestrians, primarily young people, and violently assaulting them to steal their belongings. A victim also reported the theft of his vehicle, which he had left unattended for only 20 minutes near the Primero de Marzo market. Police authorities suspect that ex-convicts from Palmasola prison are behind these crimes. A police representative stated, "It is not ruled out that they are ex-convicts. You know, a few weeks ago we presented some of these individuals who commit crimes with this modus operandi, and these individuals had records for various acts of robbery, aggravated robbery, and they were in Palmasola. In some cases, they were released two weeks ago and are already committing crimes again." The Special Force for the Fight Against Crime (FELCC) has announced operations, including raids, to identify and apprehend those responsible. These incidents underscore a growing sense of vulnerability among the population, who are urgently seeking greater security measures.
