SAN JOSÉ DE CHIQUITOS, Bolivia – A devastating truck accident near San José de Chiquitos on Wednesday afternoon resulted in the death of a 7-month-old baby and left two adults injured and trapped. The incident occurred when a trailer, reportedly transporting beer, overturned on the highway approximately 10 kilometers from San José de Chiquitos. According to initial reports, the driver swerved to avoid obstacles, causing the vehicle to lose control and flip onto its side. The accident trapped the truck's driver and a companion within the mangled cabin. Forest firefighters from San José de Chiquitos responded to the scene, but their rescue efforts were severely hampered by a critical lack of specialized equipment. "We are forest firefighters; we don't have the logistical support for vehicular rescue, like hydraulic pliers," stated one of the rescuers. He added that they were forced to use a chainsaw, typically used for cutting wood, to cut through the metal wreckage to free the trapped individuals. After an arduous two-hour operation, firefighters successfully extricated the driver and his companion. Both injured adults were immediately transferred to the nearest hospital in San José de Chiquitos. However, the recovery of the infant's body proved far more challenging, with efforts continuing into the morning hours due to the complexity of the wreckage.
