Santa Cruz, Bolivia – Truck drivers in Santa Cruz are facing unprecedented challenges due to a severe fuel shortage, leading to extensive delays and a surge in criminal activity. Many drivers report waiting for several days, and in some cases, up to a week, in long queues at gas stations, significantly disrupting their transportation schedules and livelihoods. One driver, who preferred to remain anonymous, stated, "We have been waiting since Friday. We carry special cargo from San Pablo, and this affects us greatly. We've been here for three days, and there's no diesel at the border. We had to come from the border with just the tractor." He added, "Sometimes we have to walk to the pump, and we have to fight with delinquents who are always here, watching the trucks. They steal our batteries, our sensors, all the valuable parts of the trucks." Another driver highlighted the economic toll, explaining, "It's been a week that I've been here. I'm going empty now, I have to go to Guarayos to pick up corn. This is seriously affecting me and the owner of the land, because I'm not arriving on time to pick up the corn." He further elaborated on the dangers, "Criminals steal our things, and it's even worse sometimes." The drivers' testimonies paint a grim picture of the current situation, where the lack of essential resources not only hinders economic activity but also creates a vulnerable environment for those trying to make a living.
